A signature stop on the APT river cruise is an amazing the trip to Salzburg on the Majestic Imperator. This was the royal train used by the Habsberg family.
The trip takes in beautiful country side and you are travelling luxury compartments food and drink is served on the train.
We arrive in Salzburg and head into Chapter square the square is situated between St Peters Abbey and Hohensalzburg Fortress. Te square features a statue of Neptune the god of the sea. There are regular markets in the square as well.
We made our way from here to Hohensalzburg Fortress there is a Funicular going up to the fortress and is a treat to ride in if we had more time we would have taken the walking path. The fortress was built to protect the archbishops in Austria and also served as a prison and military barracks.
The fortress was built in the 11th century and is one of the oldest existing fortresses in Europe. The fortress is an imposing structure that over looks the entire city.
There is much to be seen here you can see the cannons that were used to protect the fortress wander through the barracks and prison section view the residence and more.
The views from this place amazing across to the alps and the city it is beautiful.
Time here is short and there is so much to do. We haed down from the Fortress to take a look at the abbey off the the square and the visit is well worth while.
We move on to Mozart’s house did I forget to mention that this was the home town of the famous composer. I guess this was the real sound of music.
Just as an aside the hills in the back ground which Julie Andrews and Von Trapp family were supposed to have crossed did not take them to Switzerland they would have walked into Germany.
So Motzart’s home you can’t take photos here I have to admit that I didn’t see the embargo until I was on the second floor of the home so I did get a couple of photos, I guess I could post them but in the true spirit of travelling I respect the rules and will not post them.
Next we have to head back to the station to catch the train back and join our cruise. On the way back we take in Mirabella place the gardens here are amazing a must do while you are here.
There is so much more to see unfortunately we had 1 day in Salzburg the alps so much more.
For those of you who love the sound of music yes there is a special tour not quite Eric Clapton so I passed on that one.
